Seed - Fertilizer
Grass Seed and Fertilizer are important components to growing and maintaining a beautiful lawn. We carry a variety of products and can help you navigate what will work best for you and your clients.
Seed Coverage Guidelines
- 3-4lbs. per 1,000 square feet on over seeding
- 6-8lbs. per 1,000 square feet on new seeding (less if heavy on bluegrass)
Planting Tips
- Grass seed should be planted on 1/8” to ¼” soil coverage.
- Soil should have good moisture and be in close contact with seed. Seed to soil contact is critical. Top ½” of soil should be moist (not wet) for germination.
- Fall is the best time to seed
- If control products have been applied to turf, check label before seeding. There can be as much as a 16-week waiting period.
- Use a “Starter” fertilizer for new lawns. These contain more phosphorous and potassium, which new lawns need to prosper.
Turf Care
Crabgrass Control
Crabgrass is most effectively treated on a pre-emeregent basis using either Dimension or Mesotrione. Dimension should be used on established turf only. New seeding/overseeding should be delayed until 12 weeks from time of application. Dimension post-emergent applications are only effective on crabgrass if applied before crabgrass has displayed its fifth leaf or first tiller. Mesotrione can be used with new seeding as it will not affect grass seed germination. For the most effective control, two applications of crabgrass control are recommended.
Broadleaf Weed Control
Broadleaf weeds (clovers, dandelions, chickweeds, pigweeds, plantains, etc.) are controlled post-emergently when the weeds are small and actively growing in the spring or early fall using LockUp. LockUp works on a contact and a systemic basis. Application is best done two-three days after mowing, in the morning when dew is present. If the turf grass is under drought stress, a thorough sprinkler irrigation of at least 1/2” should be applied 1-2 days prior to application. Try to avoid making application if rainfall is expected within 24 hours.
Grub Control
Dylox is a fast-acting curative material applied when grubs are actively feeding (generally July – Sept). For preventive treatment we stock Acelepryn by Dupont, which attacks insects’ muscles, while not impacting the “good bugs” like bees. Acelepryn should be applied Mid-April to early June as it takes 60-90 days to fully dissipate in the soil. All products need to be watered in to be effective (generally ¼ - ½ inch of post-treatment irrigation is required).
FE = Iron
Iron provides a deep even green color without a lot of top growth.
